Day 1: October 17, 2022 - Sessions and Speakers
Erin Griffin, Assistant Director, Systems and Support
Erin has a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in Human Resources from Virginia Tech. She serves as the Assistant Director of Systems and Support for Procurement, overseeing the university’s e-Procurement system, HokieMart. Erin is responsible for the testing and implementation of upgrades and improvements to the HokieMart system, overseeing the HokieMart helpdesk, troubleshooting system issues, and training campus users on the e-Procurement system.
Cheri Meador, Assistant Director, Contracts, P-card and Vendor Management
Cheri serves as an Assistant Director in the Procurement. She has been with the Procurement for nine years and started with the university in the Controller’s Office processing travel vouchers. Cheri is responsible for the leadership and management of the Vendor Team, Procurement contract administration, and the P-card program. She served as project manager for the America To Go implementation. She is also currently managing a number of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) developments for the department, ensuring her teams comply with audit and compliance standards, and developing training for her areas. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Cheri worked in the private sector performing many roles, including accounting and quality assurance.
Randy Marchany, University IT Security Officer
Randy Marchany is the University Information Security Officer for Virginia Tech. He is also the director of the Virginia Tech IT Security Lab, a component of the university's Information Technology Security Office.
Day 2: October 31, 2022 - Speakers
John Talerico, Director of Export and Secure Research Compliance and Facility Security Officer
John serves as the Director of Export and Secure Research Compliance and Facility Security Officer for Virginia Tech. John has over ten years of experience in export control compliance at Virginia Tech, previously serving as a Program Manager in the office prior to being named Director in 2019. He is responsible for the leadership and management of the administrative unit charged with university-wide compliance with export control, sanctions, and industrial security laws and regulations, which involves developing and maintaining policies and procedures, training programs, and compliance plans as required. Prior to 2009, John spent three years as a Licensing Associate for Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties, Inc. charged with protecting, marketing, licensing, and working with outside entities to commercialize technologies developed at Virginia Tech. He is a 2006 graduate of the Virginia Tech MBA program and holds a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech.
Laura Hagy, HR Applications System Administrator
Laura Hagy has been with Virginia Tech for over six years, spending the last four as an Systems Administrator and Training Analyst within the Division of Human Resources. She has over 19 years of educational instruction and curriculum planning experience, including six years of professional development instruction and technical writing as a system administrator. Laura holds an MBA from Virginia Tech and is a proud member of the Hokie alumni community.
Day 3: November 7, 2022 - Speakers
Derek Scheidt, General Accounting Manager
Derek is a Certified Public Accountant and has 12 years of experience in accounting roles. Starting his career as an auditor, Derek primarily worked on large public company audits while working for KPMG. After four years, Derek transitioned to a financial reporting and internal controls role in corporate accounting, working for a publicly-traded biotechnology company with finance headquarters in Blacksburg. After another four years, he joined Virginia Tech in 2018 as the General Accounting Manager where his team is responsible for reconciling many centrally held funds, handling cash transactions between the Commonwealth of Virginia and the university, processing month-end and year-end transactions and close processes, granting Banner Finance and HokieMart access, along with other quality control reviews to ensure the university’s financial records are accurate and financial systems are properly maintained.
Justin Noble, Director of Internal Audit
Justin Noble is the Director of Internal Audit at Virginia Tech. Justin joined the office in 2019. Under the leadership of the Executive Director of Audit, Risk, and Compliance, Justin leads the university’s internal audit function in completing its annual audit plan, conducting fraud, waste and abuse reviews, and other advisory services that provide insight and advice to university leadership.
Justin completed his Master of Architecture and Master of Business Administration from Texas Tech University. Additionally, he has earned his Certified Internal Auditor certification. After graduating from Texas Tech, he began his career with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, worked for Southwest Airlines, and returned to his alma mater, the Texas Tech University System.
Justin is active in the profession, currently serving on the Nominating Committee and Athletics subcommittee for the Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA). He was previously ACUA’s president, board member-at-large, chaired the NCAA Taskforce, and led the Distance Learning Committee. Justin is a regular at the association’s conferences frequently speaking at both the AuditCon and Audit Interactive conferences. Justin is also a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and the College and University Auditors of Virginia.
